What are the rules for Narayan Bali pooja in Haridwar?

Narayan Bali Pooja is a highly potent Pooja; therefore, some rules need to be kept in mind before performing:

1. Head of the family: The eldest male member should perform this Pooja. If he is unavailable, then the next eldest in the family line should do so. In the absence of male members, females can also perform it in some cases.

2. Purpose of the Pooja: This Pooja is performed in cases of unnatural and premature deaths, not for natural causes. It is conducted in instances of accidents, suicide, chronic illnesses, etc.

3. Best time to perform: Besides Pitra Paksha, this Pooja can be conducted on Amavasya, Panchami, Ashtami, and other auspicious days. It may also be performed on the 10th, 11th, 13th, or 15th day, the first death anniversary, or according to family customs and traditions. When done in sacred cities, any date is considered favourable.

4. Ritual Rules: Some of the mandatory procedures for the Pooja include Five Kalash — Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Yam, and Pret — and the chanting of Brahma, Purush, Rudra, Yam, and Pret Suktams. Sixteen Pindas are prepared as offerings to the deceased, and Havan is the final act of the Pooja.
